What is butterfly clicking?
Butterfly clicking means alternating two fingers (usually index and middle) on the same mouse button, like a butterfly’s wings beating. Each finger only clicks half as often, so together they can easily double your normal click speed. On many mice it reaches 15–25 CPS.
How to butterfly click
- Place your index and middle fingers on the left button, side by side.
- Rest your palm lightly on the mouse, or hover it for more freedom.
- Alternate the two fingers: index, middle, index, middle. Keep each tap short and light.
- Start slowly and build speed. Even rhythm beats raw speed.
Butterfly benchmarks (10 seconds)
| CPS | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 12 | Still learning the alternation |
| 12–15 | Butterfly is working |
| 15–20 | Good |
| 20–25 | Excellent |
| 25+ | Exceptional, on a mouse that suits it |
Read your graph
Butterfly clicking produces a jagged line when your fingers fall out of sync. If you see regular dips, one finger is lagging. Slow down slightly until the line flattens, then build speed again. A flat graph at 16 CPS beats a spiky one averaging 15.
Which mice work best
Butterfly clicking works on most mice, but it’s fastest with:
- a light, short-travel main button,
- a button wide enough for two fingertips,
- low debounce time. Some gaming mice merge very fast clicks, which lowers butterfly scores.
Fair play
The leaderboard accepts butterfly clicking. Its rhythm is human and varies naturally, so it passes the auto-clicker check. Game servers set their own rules, and many cap CPS. Compare with the other techniques on the drag click test and jitter click test.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good butterfly clicking CPS?
Over 10 seconds, 15–20 CPS is good and 20–25 is excellent. Beginners usually start around 12–14 while they find the rhythm.
Is butterfly clicking allowed on Minecraft servers?
Some servers allow it, some cap CPS, and some ban it. Hypixel and other large networks have their own rules and anti-cheat, so check before using it in PvP.
Butterfly vs jitter clicking: which is better?
Butterfly is usually faster and easier on the arm over 10+ seconds. Jitter gives more aim control because one finger stays still on the button. Many players use both.
