How the spacebar counter works
- Choose a length, from 1 second up to 2 minutes.
- Press Space once to start. The timer begins with that first press, and it counts.
- Keep pressing until time runs out. The page won’t scroll while the test runs.
- Your result shows presses per second, the total, a speed graph, your rank and your personal best. Every length has its own weekly leaderboard.
Holding the key down doesn’t count, because operating-system auto-repeat is ignored. Only separate, real presses are counted.
Which length should you pick?
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| 1–5 seconds | Peak speed, like a quick burst in a game |
| 10 seconds | The standard benchmark, ranked on the leaderboard |
| 15–30 seconds | Rhythm and consistency |
| 60–120 seconds | Stamina, the long spacebar challenges popular on social media |
Spacebar counter by length
Every length also has its own page with benchmarks, tips and its own leaderboard:
| Length | Page |
|---|---|
| 1 second | Spacebar counter 1 second |
| 2 seconds | Spacebar counter 2 seconds |
| 5 seconds | Spacebar counter 5 seconds |
| 10 seconds | Spacebar counter 10 seconds |
| 15 seconds | Spacebar counter 15 seconds |
| 30 seconds | Spacebar counter 30 seconds |
| 1 minute | Spacebar counter 60 seconds |
| 100 seconds | Spacebar counter 100 seconds |
| 2 minutes | Spacebar counter 120 seconds |
On this page, the leaderboard switches to whichever length you pick.
Spacebar speed benchmarks (10 seconds)
| Presses per second | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 5 | Relaxed |
| 5–7 | Average |
| 7–9 | Fast |
| 9–12 | Very fast |
| 12+ | Excellent (two thumbs or jitter) |
Techniques for a faster space bar
- One thumb: the usual method. Rest your thumb on the bar and tap from the joint, not the wrist.
- Two thumbs alternating: the keyboard version of butterfly clicking, and usually the fastest.
- Two fingers drumming: index and middle fingers in turn. It feels odd at first, but it can beat thumbs.
- Hit the middle of the bar. Pressing near the ends can make the stabilisers bind and slow you down.
Your keyboard matters too. Short-travel, linear switches are fastest, and a rattling or sticky space bar can drop presses. If the counter skips presses or adds extra ones, run the key chatter test.
Free count mode
Switch to Free count above to use the space bar as a tally counter with no timer. It’s handy for counting reps, items or events in a video without looking away. The count is saved in your browser. For counting with the mouse instead, use the click counter.
Where spacebar speed matters
Spacebar speed matters in rhythm games, platformers with repeated jumps, and browser games that use Space to act. For the rest of the keyboard, try the keyboard CPS test. If you play shooters, the SOCD tester checks how your keyboard handles fast direction changes.
Frequently asked questions
Does holding down the space bar count?
No. Holding a key makes your operating system auto-repeat it, and those repeats are ignored. Only real, separate presses count.
What's a good spacebar speed?
Over 10 seconds, 6–8 presses per second is average, 9–12 is fast, and above 12 usually means two thumbs or a jitter-style technique.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes. Phones don't have a space bar, so tapping the pad counts as a press on touch screens.
What is Free count mode?
A tally counter with no timer: every Space press (or tap) adds one, and the total is saved in your browser. Use it to count anything while your hands stay on the keyboard.
